about

Peaceful, prayerful, evocative. Total surrender to the divine. These are the words that Sikhs recite before the Ardas or prayer in Gurdwara (temple). When I read these words, I see how we come forward in complete humility to offer our prayer.

This piece begins with a 'mangala charn' -- an introductory recitation of a shabd or mantra. In this case, I selected the Mool Mantra, the first words of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib and by Guru Naanak. The tune came to me during the time that we recording this album and Jon and I laid it down in the studio one day.

The shabd that follows, Tum Maat Pitaa, is a composition of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the 5th Sikh Guru. It is in the classical Indian scale, or Raag, of Yemen Kalyan and in the 8 beat rhythm, or Taal, Kehrvaa. I selected this shabd to begin the album for its prayerful sweetness and tranquility.

Mool Mantra - Guru Naanak Dev Ji – SGGS page 1

Ek ong kaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhang gur parsaad.

One Universal Creator God. The Name Is Truth. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying, Beyond Birth, Self-Existent. By Guru's Grace.

jap.

Chant And Meditate.

aad sach jugaad sach.

True In The Primal Beginning. True Throughout The Ages.

hai bhee sach naanak hosee bhee sach. ||1||

True Here And Now. O Nanak, Forever And Ever True. ||1||

Prayer - Tum Maat Pitaa (Too Thaakur Tum Peh Ardaas) – Guru Arjan Dev Ji -- SGGS page 268

Too thaakur tum peh ardaas.

You are our Lord and Master; to You, I offer this prayer.

Jee-o pind sabh tayree raas.

This body and soul are all Your property.

Tum maat pitaa ham baarik tayray.

You are our mother and father; we are Your children.

Tumree kirpaa meh sookh ghanayray.

In Your Grace, there are so many joys!

Ko-ay na jaanai tumraa ant.

No one knows Your limits.

Oochay tay oochaa bhagvant.

O Highest of the High, Most Generous God,

Sagal samagree tumrai sutr dhaaree.

the whole creation is strung on Your thread.

Tum tay ho-ay so aagi-aakaaree.

That which has come from You is under Your Command.

Tumree gat mit tum hee jaanee.

You alone know Your state and extent.

Naanak daas sadaa kurbaanee. ||8||4||

Naanak, Your slave, is forever a sacrifice. ||8||4||
